What this is
AI search optimization in Brooklyn is the work of making an independent Brooklyn business the one an AI assistant names when a customer asks who to call. Signal is an AI SEO and local SEO agency of one person, based in Brooklyn, and it does that work neighbourhood by neighbourhood. The method itself is on AI search optimization. This page is about Brooklyn: what the assistants say about it, the neighbourhood pages, and what’s on record here.
Same questions, whole borough
Between 2 and 4 October 2026, Signal asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude who the best optometrist, physical therapist and chiropractor in Brooklyn is: the same three questions it asked about Crown Heights, with Brooklyn in place of the neighbourhood. Across the 12 answers the four engines named 42 different practices and practitioners, and only 3 were named by more than one engine, each by two engines: one optometrist and two chiropractic practices. For physical therapists, no two engines named the same practice.
Every one of the 12 answers named at least one practice or practitioner, and Zocdoc was among the sources behind all 12.
| The question | Practices named | Named by 2+ engines |
|---|---|---|
| Who’s the best optometrist in Brooklyn? | 13 | 1 |
| Who’s the best physical therapist in Brooklyn? | 16 | 0 |
| Who’s the best chiropractor in Brooklyn? | 13 | 2 |
| All three | 42 | 3 |
Naming the neighbourhood narrowed the answers: 24 names instead of 42, and 5 shared between engines instead of 3. That’s one comparison from one set of days, not a rule. It’s why Signal writes a page per neighbourhood, and why each one carries its own dated answers.
ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude were asked on 2 October 2026 and Perplexity on 4 October 2026, each question once per engine, through the provider’s API, with web search on and the searcher placed in central Brooklyn (in Crown Heights for the neighbourhood questions). API answers approximate what a person sees in the apps; they aren’t identical. Perplexity’s API answered with an OpenAI model on Perplexity’s own search. Signal counted the practices named in each answer by hand; a practitioner named with a practice counts as the practice. This is a sample from those days, not a ranking, and Signal doesn’t publish the names. The same questions are asked again each month.
The questions are frozen, word for word, and asked again on the 1st of each month about Brooklyn and about each neighbourhood with a page. New results are added with their dates; the October 2026 baseline stays.
Neighbourhoods
Crown Heights
Nostrand, Franklin, Kingston and Utica Avenues, Eastern Parkway and Atlantic Avenue. The named case, Nostrand Optical, is on Nostrand Avenue.
Asked 2–4 Oct 2026: 24 practices and practitioners named across 12 answers; 5 named by more than one engine.
Brighton Beach
Brighton Beach Avenue under the B and Q, from Ocean Parkway to Corbin Place, asked about in English and in Russian. The nearby named work is Brooklyn BJJ Lessons, the founder’s own business, on Brighton Beach Avenue. Читать по-русски.
Asked 2–4 Oct 2026: 34 practices and practitioners named in English and 26 in Russian; only 9 named in both languages.
Sheepshead Bay
Emmons Avenue on the waterfront and Sheepshead Bay Road at the B/Q station. The named client is Vision Palace Optical, an optometry practice on Avenue U.
Asked 2–4 Oct 2026: 34 practices and practitioners named across 12 answers; 6 named by more than one engine.
Bensonhurst
86th Street under the D, 18th Avenue and Bay Parkway. Signal has no client in Bensonhurst yet, and the page says so.
Asked 2–4 Oct 2026: 30 practices and practitioners named across 12 answers; 5 named by more than one engine; no chiropractor named by more than one.
Each neighbourhood gets a page only when it has its own dated answers and its own streets, and each page says plainly what proof it has.
What Signal has shown in Brooklyn
Nostrand Optical — optometry, Crown Heights. An independent practice on Nostrand Avenue. Signal rebuilt the site with LocalBusiness, MedicalBusiness and FAQPage markup, and validated four rich-result types in Google’s Rich Results Test on launch day. The full write-up shows what was built and what is on record; the neighbourhood page is Crown Heights.
Brooklyn BJJ Lessons — martial arts. The founder’s own practice: a one-page booking site with Person and LocalBusiness markup and a verified Business Profile. ChatGPT first cited it 41 days after launch.
The prompts for both were checked by hand and logged on 8 Sep 2026, and the BJJ prompt again on 28 Sep 2026. Each row is one check on one day, not a ranking, and the misses sit next to the hits:
| Checked | Industry | Engine | Prompt | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 Sep 2026 | Optometry | ChatGPT | optometrist in Crown Heights Brooklyn that takes Medicaid | Cited — second of four named, with the correct address and phone |
| 8 Sep 2026 | Optometry | Perplexity | optometrist in Crown Heights Brooklyn that takes Medicaid | Cited — named first; nostrandoptical.com was the cited source |
| 8 Sep 2026 | Optometry | Google AI Overviews | optometrist in Crown Heights Brooklyn that takes Medicaid | Cited — one of two practices listed; both sources were Nostrand’s own pages |
| 8 Sep 2026 | Optometry | Gemini | optometrist in Crown Heights Brooklyn that takes Medicaid | Not cited |
| 8 Sep 2026 | Optometry | ChatGPT | eye doctor near Nostrand Avenue Brooklyn open Saturday | Cited — first of five, with Saturday hours quoted from the site |
| 8 Sep 2026 | Optometry | ChatGPT | best optometrist in Brooklyn | Not cited — the six practices named were all rated 4.7–4.9 with 179–564 reviews |
| 8 Sep 2026 | Martial arts | ChatGPT | BJJ private lessons Brooklyn | Cited — first of five, named as the pick |
| 28 Sep 2026 | Martial arts | ChatGPT, signed out (iPhone Safari) | BJJ private lessons Brooklyn | Cited — listed first of six, with the site as the source |
“Best optometrist in Brooklyn” is a borough-wide prompt, and it’s a miss: ratings and review volume decided that answer. The hits are on prompts that name a neighbourhood, a street or a service. The evidence ledger has every row, with the prompt, the engine, the date and what came back.
By industry
Optometry. Asked about Brooklyn, the engines named 13 practices and optometrists, and only one optometrist was named by two engines. Plans, exams and frames have to be on the practice’s own pages. More on AI search optimization for optometrists.
Physical therapy. 16 names, and no two engines named the same practice. Asked about Crown Heights instead, all four engines named the same one. More on AI search optimization for physical therapists.
Chiropractic. 13 names; two practices were each named by two engines, and no practice by more. More on AI search optimization for chiropractors, including New York’s scope and advertising rules.
How the work runs, and what it costs
- 1. A free AI search check. Send a two-minute form; I ask the AI assistants what a customer in your area would ask, and reply in writing within one business day with what they answer and who they name. Get your free AI check.
- 2. Written findings. If the findings point to work worth doing, I’ll propose it. If they don’t, you keep the audit and I’ll say so.
- 3. The build — from $2,500. The site, the structured data, the Business Profile, the listings. Larger builds — multiple locations, 12+ pages — go up to $5,000.
- 4. The retainer — from $650 a month. Site care, fixes and changes, Search Console and indexing oversight, gated articles under your business’s byline, reporting, and the evidence ledger kept current.
The number is in writing before anything starts. The package is on the homepage.
Beyond Brooklyn
Signal is available to businesses in the other New York City boroughs, on Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk), in Northern New Jersey and in Fairfield County, Connecticut. The work is remote; the prompts are local. There are no location pages outside Brooklyn yet, because a page needs its own dated answers before it’s worth reading.
Questions Brooklyn owners ask
- Why neighbourhood pages?
- Because patients ask about neighbourhoods, and the answers change when they do. Asked about Brooklyn as a whole, the engines’ answers barely overlapped; asked about Crown Heights, they met more often. A neighbourhood page exists only when it has its own dated answers, its own streets and its own proof, not a copy of another page with the name changed.
- Why don’t you name the practices the engines listed?
- Because a few days’ answers aren’t a ranking, and these pages aren’t about other practices. The counts, sources and dates are what’s useful: they show how much the answers move between assistants.
- Do you work with businesses outside Brooklyn?
- Yes. Brooklyn is home, but Signal is available to businesses across New York City, Long Island, Northern New Jersey and Fairfield County, Connecticut. The work — service pages, structured data, Business Profile, listings — happens remotely.
- Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend us?
- No, and be careful of anyone who says they can. Signal builds the pages an assistant needs in order to name you, then records what the assistants actually return, by prompt and by date, on the public evidence ledger, including the prompts where you aren’t named. You see the same rows I do.
- What’s the difference between AI search optimization, AI SEO, GEO and local SEO?
- AI search optimization, AI SEO and GEO (generative engine optimization) are three names for the same work: making a business something AI assistants can find, trust and quote. Local SEO is the older discipline of showing up in Google’s local results and map listings. For a local business the two overlap heavily, because both depend on the same facts stated the same way everywhere. There’s a longer explanation on the What is GEO? page.
